Colby Lumber was originally established as McGonigal & Sons about the same time the town of Colby was chartered in 1885. The Foster Lumber
Company bought the Lumberyard in 1887 and in 1890 Thomas Foster made
his headquarters at Colby and looked after the other Foster yards in this area.
The original lumber yard was located at the corner of 4th and Chickamaugua until it was relocated to it’s current location on West 4th street in 1964. Some of the buildings were moved to the current location and are still in use today.
Foster Lumber was sold to a group of investors and for a short time did business as Diamond Lumber and Diamond International.
Colby Lumber was purchased from Diamond International in March of 1983 by Bill and LeMoine Dowd. Buddy VanHorn who was the manager for Fosters and Diamond remained the manager at Colby Lumber and later became a shareholder.
Upon retirement Buddy VanHorn sold his interest to Don & Lori McKenzie.
For over 130 years the lumberyard has served the community and surrounding area with building materials for all kind of construction projects.
